Not always the same thing though. </p> <p>The job of art is what was intended, but what it actually does is probably more personal.</p> <p>Still, we can use what has been written to help us get beyond the more personal view and go for something more informed and objective.</p> <p>Here we see Josephy Beuys’ Fat Chair and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty.</p> <p>The function of Fat Chair seems to be to ask us to question the use of a chair/fat and therefore questioning ‘knowledge’ as a fixed thing. I also know that Beuys uses fat/lard as a symbol for protection and possibly comfort.</p> <p>Smithson was interested in entropy, things collapsing, everything coming to an end. This is echoed in the shape of the spiral.
